Here’s an overview of the new Skype for Business 2016 Mac client. As stated in the introduction, anyone can now download Skype for Business for Mac from Microsoft. The system requirements for Skype for Business on Mac are OS X 10.11 El Capitan or macOS Sierra 10.12. Skype for Business is an enterprise grade communication and collaboration tool. You can have both Skype and Skype for Business installed on your device. They are independent applications that do not interact with each other. The main differences are the account you use to sign-in and the features that are available. Skype for Business uses your campus email address and allows you to communicate with co-workers and provides scheduling from Outlook and the ability to share content.
2. Can I connect to Skype users and contacts using Skype for Business?
No, Skype for Business and Skype for Desktop are two separate environments. Contacts and calls between the two are not available.
3. Can I make phone calls to regular phone numbers?
Not until the Enterprise Voice is enabled will you be able to make regular calls from within the desktop application. Phone calls to standard phone numbers are available only by using Enterprise Voice, a Skype for Business feature only available to employees with a campus issued mobile device. If you were issued a campus mobile device and are interested in this capability please contact the IT Help Desk [email protected], or call 657-278-7777. Please note for this application to work you will need to have a desk phone as well as a mobile phone.
4. Do I need a PIN, work number, or extension?
Not always. Most of the time when you call in to the meeting, you get connected right away. You only need a PIN and extension if:
•You’re the leader (Organizer) of the meeting, and calling from a phone that isn’t connected to your account; such as a cell phone.
•You’re an attendee, but the meeting is secured and you need to be identified before joining, (referred to as Authenticated caller).

When prompted, use your phone dial pad to enter your number and PIN.
If you don’t remember your PIN, click Forgot your Dial-in PIN in the meeting request and follow the instructions on the page to reset.
5. How can I have Skype for Business start automatically when I turn on my device?
- Click the gear icon on the upper-right-hand side of your contact list
- Select Personal from the list of options on the left
- Check Automatically start the app when I log in to Windows
- Click OK to save your changes
6. How do I use Skype for Business on my iPad?
iOS users can communicate with Lync 2013 users by using Skype for Business. The Skype for Business app for iOS is available as a free download from the iOS App store. Please note that if you have Lync 2013 installing Skype for Business will not remove it.

To schedule a Skype for Business meeting within Outlook, do the following:
- From the Mail window click New Items to expand a list of Outlook tasks and select Skype Meeting
- A new meeting window should pop up and the body of the invite will be pre-populated with a link to the Skype meeting, as shown below:
- Fill in all meeting details such as To, Subject and Start/End time
- Click Send
- To join the meeting, attendees must click the Join Skype Meeting link during the established time. Attendees can also test the meeting link beforehand to ensure that their audio and video are working properly.
You can also schedule a Skype meeting by clicking the New Skype Meeting button from the Outlook Calendar view, as shown below.
10. What is the Skype for Business Web App?
The Skype for Business Web App is a browser-based version of Skype for Business that can be used to join a meeting if you do not have Skype for Business installed on your machine. This is especially useful for inviting people from outside CSU Fullerton to your Skype for Business meetings. For instructions on using the Skype for Business Web App see Microsoft article . 11. I have someone that regularly schedule and accepts meetings on my behalf. How do I setup a delegate in Skype for Business?
Follow these instructions to setup a delegate. This allows the delegate to create, edit, cancel, and accept/reject Skype for Business meetings on your behalf.
12. Can we request an Skype for Business Enterprise voice account for my student assistant?
Student employees and administrative accounts are not eligbile for an Enterprise voice account. A campus issued cell phone and deskphone with an assigned extension are required.
13. Will IT provide my student assistant Skype for Business hardware accessories (e.g. webcam or headset)?

There’s been a big update to the Skype for Business for Mac client this month ! this follows the recent February update.
Some features are only SfB Online so watch out of this. Ive tried to highlight below.

Client requirements (Same as previous updates)
- Skype for Business Server 2015 or Lync Server 2013 (doesn’t mention SfB Online but it will be supported im sure)
- OSX 10.11 (El Capitan) or OSX 10.12 (Sierra) – Same as previous
- Outlook Mac build 15.27 (161010) required for Outlook integration – Same as previous
SfBO / Lync Server 2013 / SfB Server 2015 requirements (Same as previous updates)
- Skype for Business Server 2015 customers minimum CU of Skype for Business Server 2015 Cumulative Update version 9319.272 or higher.
- Lync Server 2013 CU Lync Server 2013 Cumulative Update version 8308.974 or higher. Mentions Lync Server 2013 should upgrade to SfB Server 2015.
- Lync Server 2010 is not supported – instead we recommend customers continue to use the Lync for Mac 2011 client.
First off lets have a look at what’s new in the April 2018 Update?
There’s a lot of big things here! With adding delegates without being enabled for Enterprise Voice ! This is SfB Online ONLY at the moment and mentions will be available with SfB Server with later update.
Setting location for E-911 and call back for poor networks is great. ! I would imagine this is big update for SfB Mac users!

Mentioned as improvement below and not new but we also have – Added support for Video-based screen sharing (VbSS) in 1-to-1 calls. (Skype for Business Online only)

Alot of meeting related fixes and addition of VbSS in peer to peer calls for SfB Online users only
- Fixed several issues that could prevent a user from seeing screen sharing in a meeting.
- Fixed an issue that prevented an error message being displayed when the app fails to sign in.
- Fixed an issue that prevented a user from rejoining a meeting or call after hanging up.
- Fixed an issue that incorrectly showed the message “You were disconnected from the presentation due to network issues.” when joining a meeting.
- Added support for Video-based screen sharing (VbSS) in 1-to-1 calls. (Skype for Business Online only)
- Improved performance of starting and updating screen sharing.

Support for E-911 emergency calls made from Skype for Business on Mac has the following requirements for on-premises servers:
- Skype for Business on Mac version 16.11 or later.
- Skype for Business Server 2015, December 2017 update or Lync Server 2013, November 2016 update (CU8 HF1).
- Enable911 in CsPlatformServiceSettings must be true.
- West Safety Services customers: Emergency Gateway Version 5.4.
- EnhancedEmergencyServicesEnabled property of the user’s location policy is enabled. (Note: it is not sufficient to enable EnhancedEmergencyServicesEnabled on the location policy applied to the network site of the subnet to which the user is connected.)
